Yesteryear Collection

The kindness of a patrolling Hove police officer to the late Miss Catherine Gurney, OBE, when she was a young girl, led her to become the benefactress to the Police Service by establishing the Police Orphanage at Hove, Sussex, in 1890.
With the assistance of the local church, the Orphanage provided board, lodging and education and within ten years it was possible to purchase a larger house at Redhill, Surrey. The Orphanage closed in 1947 when the Gurney Fund for Police Orphans was established.
This model has been commissioned to commemorate the Centenary of the Fund and Orphanage and bears the crest of the Borough of Hove Police, circa 1890.
